Fostering for SENC
Thank you for your interest in fostering through SENC Rescue!
Fostering a dog is so rewarding! Unlike many rescues, we don't have a shelter or kennel where we keep the dogs in our care. This means that all of the dogs in our care go from the surrendering family directly into a foster home.
Fosters not only provide love and care for the dogs, but they also help us get to know the dog. Sharing all the information a foster learns about their foster dog is extremely important because it's the knowledge we gain while the dog is in their foster home that enables us to make the best decisions for the dogs on their future placement.
Q: What are the requirements to become an approved Foster Home?
A: You must complete our online Foster Application, telephone interview, personal and current veterinarian reference checks, and a home inspection.
Q: What costs are associated with fostering?
A:SENC Rescue Inc. takes care of all pre-approved medical bills, and any emergency medical bills when consulted with a SENC Rescue Inc officer. In cases deemed medically necessary, SENC Rescue Inc. will cover grooming expenses. We ask that fosters provide quality and age appropriate food for large breed dogs (we are happy to provide recommendations!). Any additional toys, treats, etc. is not required by the foster, but appreciated!
Q: How long will the foster dog stay in my home?
A:This can range anywhere from 3 weeks to a few months dependent upon the needs of the foster dog (medical, etc), and the availability of the right adoptive home for your foster. Our suggestion is typically to plan to have the dog from 3 to 8 weeks.
Q: Do I need any special housing to foster?
A: SENC Rescue Inc. requires a physically fenced in yard (exceptions can be made by a SENC Rescue officer in exceptional cases). We also ask that you have the ability to create a "safe space" for your foster during the first 7 days of their decompression. This would be a space where they can go and be alone and separate from any other resident pets in your home.

Q: Would I be responsible for placing the dog myself?
A: No, however, we definitely value the foster parent’s input, suggestions, and concerns regarding a potential adoptive home.. SENC Rescue Inc. will make the final decision where a dog is placed.
Q: What if my foster animal isn’t working out?
A: SENC Rescue, Inc. will make every effort to ensure a good and safe foster match. We will also provide each foster with a set of foster guidelines, and a prep list to help them get ready to welcome a new foster dog into their home. Often times, challenges arise during the initial 3 week decompression period when a foster dog is getting comfortable in their new home. Our team will provide you with recommendations for how to mitigate these challenges.
If a foster truly isn't working out, we are happy to take the dog back into our care. We ask that you give us at least a 24-72 hour period to make new arrangements for your foster. In emergency cases, we will make arrangements necessary to remove the foster dog.

Q: Can I adopt my foster animal?
A: A "foster fail" is the best kind of failure! You can absolutely adopt your foster Newfoundland, however all final adoption decisions will still be made by a SENC Rescue Inc. officer.
Sometimes fostering failing means you will no longer be able to foster other dogs in your home. Think through your decision carefully, and know that if it is not the perfect fit, we will find the perfect home for your foster dog!

Q: What if I have to leave town?
A: Please notify us as soon as you know you will have to travel so that appropriate arrangements can be made to care for your foster dog. You are welcome to travel with your foster dog. We welcome recommendations on dog sitting and boarding facilities, but ultimately the choice of accommodations and expense approval will be made by an SENC Rescue Inc. officer.
